The call for help came via a Facebook message. True Colours Theatre provides fun and accessible classes that are a lifeline for many families in the North East. However, the long waiting list meant they desperately needed a new space to support as many people as possible. Willington Quay Boys Club in Wallsend had the potential to be a perfect new home for the school, but it lacked electricity, heating, natural light, and disabled access. With limited funds, True Colours needed help to renovate their new home. The project was especially meaningful to Ray Hope, our Managing Director, as it involved converting his old club that he frequently attended during primary and high school.
RayFire Services engaged with manufacturing and supply partners, including Apollo Fire Detectors, Advanced, and Park Electrical, to source and secure all necessary equipment and materials completely free of charge, for their part of the project. This generous support enabled us to complete the entire job without any cost to the charity or DIY SOS. We proceeded to design, install, and commission the new system in collaboration with Advanced, which provided additional non-standard touch control equipment to ensure the best finish possible upon completion.
The renovation resulted in a stunning makeover that included a dance studio, a café, a sensory room, a sensory garden, and a huge glittering disco ball. The theatre now boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including improved accessibility for people with disabilities, updated lighting and sound systems, and a revamped stage area. The founder and CEO of True Colours Theatre, Alisar, was overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness of the community and the celebrities who made her dream come true. She proudly remarked on the positive impact the new space would have, saying, “We’re really proud of the fact that they’re able to go out into the world and be themselves.”
Nick Knowles, host of BBC DIY SOS, expressed his admiration for the project:
“We’re back, and what a way to kick off the Big Build with a brilliant group of Strictly stars that will inspire and delight the children, young adults, and staff from True Colours. There’s about a hundred tradespeople a day on site. This is day three of our Wallsend build which is flying along – I cannot believe the fantastic can-do attitude of those that are working their arses off here to build for children with conditions and disabilities. Big hearts here.”
Ali, the founder of True Colours Theatre, shared her gratitude and the impact of the renovation:
“True Colours Theatre is an inclusive theatre school and registered charity for children and young people in the North East. We focus on confidence building through performing arts and social activities. We’ve had amazing support from the local community and trades; their help has been absolutely outstanding. We have proud moments every single day. Every single time one of our members achieves something new, steps out of their comfort zone, and grows in confidence. We’re really proud of the fact that they’re able to go out into the world and be themselves.”
The school had outgrown its existing space in Wallsend, and True Colours would have had to turn away new members if their waiting list became too long. True Colours were given the keys to a run-down building with lots of potential but lacked basic amenities. Without the help of DIY SOS, the building conversion wouldn’t have been possible. Ali was given a £90,000 quote just for the first stage of the project. “It would’ve cost us a vast amount so having this opportunity was pretty awesome,” she added.
Nick Knowles, the BBC DIY SOS team, and hundreds of local contractors stepped in to create an inclusive space where True Colours can continue to transform lives for many years to come. We were delighted to support this amazing cause and, alongside our partners, installed an Advanced fire alarm system with TouchControl to protect the newly-renovated building. It was a pleasure to be involved, and we commend everyone who took part in making this project a success.
This project highlighted the power of community support and collaboration. It was a testament to how people coming together with a shared purpose can create meaningful change. The experience underscored the importance of innovative solutions and the positive impact they can have on organisations and the communities they serve.
